Our regular weekly meeting is 7pm every Wednesday at Henfield Leisure Centre...a smaller group regularly visits the track at Withdean Stadium, Brighton every Tuesday at 7.45pm (there is a £2.65 charge)...

August 2004 Newsletter


Ladies, gents, kiddies, Joggers all:

I hope you are having a good summer and enjoying this wave of Spanish-style heat (ordered specially by me, of course!).

After all these years, I have learnt that the British weather is totally unpredictable, but that life still goes on in spite of it.

And so, events like the Roundhill Romp happened, even in seriously unpleasant conditions.

Praise must be given to those of you who managed to run (?) the 6 miles up, along and down from Chanctonbury. Although, I must confess, I think you are all hard cases!

And talking about madness, the Bath Tub Race took place in Bramber along the River Adur on July 17th. Our chief engineer, Roger, with Richard and Doug, the Master Builders, Duncan, Keeper General and Malcolm M as specialist consultant, were able to make considerable technical improvements to the Jolly Jogger.

But, despite the valiant efforts of our determined rowers, (Kay and Malcolm M in particular), yet again, we did not prove ourselves to be serious contenders for the winners’ title.

A good day was had by all and the weather held out eventually.

We are improving our overall position in the race but are taking longer every year!

The results for THE JOLLY JOGGER, our very own tub are

  1. 34th out of 45 tubs in 1:59:29
  2. 25th out of 41 tubs in 2:09:34
  3. 20th out of 41 tubs in 2:13:40

Well done to the crew and support team! (More flour and water pistols are needed for next year’s event).

A special mention is due for our virgin rower, Kay, who nearly went all the way, how are those shoulders?

The date for next year is July 23rd starting from Upper Beeding Bridge at 2.45pm


And continuing with the optimistic summer theme, a reminder of the B-B-Q at Widewater Lagoon. However, please note that the correct date is Friday August 27th, not 29th as advertised in the previous newsletter.

Meet in Shoreham at 6.30pm for a pre-BBQ run and then cool off in the sea. Afterwards, relax in the beautiful evening sunshine with your own favourite food and wine

(Directions/ map on the Notice Board).


For those new to this event, the BBQ will be lit for you to use. You will need to bring everything else. (Do bring something to sit on and wrap up in. A torch is useful for later.)

Everyone welcome; bring the kids.


We hope for good weather on September 18th, when our own fun run, the SEVEN STILES will take place. It is always an opportunity for our club to earn lots of points in the Fun Run League. So, it is great to see as many Joggers as possible participating.

However, do remember that a lot of helpers are also needed, mostly as marshals (see Liz B and Richard), and as results compilers on the computer (see Mark W)





Also, is any one interested in an old-fashioned Sunday afternoon pic-nic and rounders match? This is planned for Sunday September 5th from 3.00pm. Just turn up with your own

pic-nic at the Kings Field and enjoy a fun afternoon. All welcome.


The committee are looking into the possibility of hiring a track for some pre-Xmas running, possibly with a mince pie or two. 

Watch this space, but the provisional date is Wednesday 15th December.


Now, nobody could say that the Henfield Joggers membership of £10 a year is not good value for money.

Still, some 40 of us have yet to pay for 2004-2005. Please, please, please! Make an effort to pay Brian Griffiths as soon as possible.



Frankly, it is not fair to those members who have paid promptly. Watch it! You may find yourself shamed in a rather public way


A really super event!

Cristina and Malcolm made us all very welcome to their home for excellent food, beer, wine and company.



The garden looked lovely and the games were great, although I have heard that there are some keys missing somewhere! Any ideas?

This was very popular last year.

Would any one like to "do the other end " this year? That means starting from Beachy Head.

Please, add your name to the notice board list or let Liz B know if you are interested.

The proposed date is Saturday October 23rd (the week before Barns Green).

Walkers will be more than welcome and it will be suitable for all levels of running.

Does any one fancy giving this a go? Teams of 11 are needed for this fund-raising dragon boat race on Hove Lagoon on September 11th.

This was advertised in the local paper, and the person to contact is Harriet Gill on 01273 828 449. Kay is co-ordinating this event for us.

Money raised is for Impact Initiatives which works with voluntary groups across West Sussex.


Does anyone fancy hosting a party this year?

Do think about it.

We congratulate Cathy and Tom U, and Jo L and Mark B on their recent nuptials. We wish them all the best!


This is on Friday December 17th. There will be plenty of room for everyone, but, as it is a little more expensive this year, possibly £30 pp, anyone who would like to pay £10, please, see Brian G or Liz B.



We all know the importance of stretching down after a run. Or, do we? And, do we really know how to do it properly?

Liz Marks has kindly offered to do a stretch-down session for us after our monthly handicap, at 8:30 pm approx. Let’s make the most of it!




The next committee meeting takes place on Monday October 18th. The next newsletter will follow soon after. So, if there are any issues you want your committee to discuss, please, let one of its members know in advance of that date. They are Liz Brindley, Richard Knight, Darrell and Debbie Locke,Debbie Slade, Mark Walton and Brian Griffiths.


Debbie and Darrell have religiously produced and clearly presented these for a while. They now find themselves unable to continue due to work and family commitments.

If you are interested in taking over their role, please, tell them or other committee members.
